Ajax coach explains why he started Mohammed Kudus ahead of Brian Brobbey in UCL opener against Rangers

Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder explained why he decided to start Mohammed Kudus ahead of Brian Brobbey in the UEFA Champions League group opener against Rangers on Wednesday at the Amsterdam Arena.

The Ghana midfielder scored his first goal in the competition from a brilliant solo effort in the first half.

Kudus was adjudged man of the match by UEFA's technical committee after the 4-0 win against the Scottish giants.

It was the first start for the Ghana star this season for Ajax after being reduced to the bench as a substitute despite his terrific form this season.

Alfred Schreuder opted for  Mohammed Kudus ahead of Brian Brobbey who has been the leading striker for Ajax this season with two goals in five appearances in the league.

Coach Schreuder in an interview indicated how he selected Kudus due to the defensive set up of Rangers central duo Connor Goldson and James Sands.

"We have also tried Kudus in the vanguard a number of times in preparation. Because he is agile but also very ball-resistant, I expect that he can do this well"

He added, "Brian Brobbey is disappointed, but it's important that he convert that into positive energy."
